  • Friday 30 April 2021 Headteacher's Blog 30th April 2021 There is a feel of spring in the air this week, although I’m sure you would agree, we could do with the temperature rising a little!
  • Friday 23 April 2021 Headteacher's Blog 23rd April 2021 Welcome back to school after a lovely sunny Easter break.  Students and staff have returned rested and fully charged, ready to steam forward into the summer term.
  • Thursday 1 April 2021 Headteacher's Blog 1st April 2021 We have come to the end of what feels like a hard term despite us only being back at school since March.  We have dealt with remote learning and changed our whole way of working to ensure just as much challenge and high-quality lessons as if the students had been in school.  I know this was difficult for staff and students at times but we adapted our way of working to achieve some outstanding work and high levels of engagement. We also had our visit from Ofsted who praised us for this aspect of our work. On top of this we have had the ongoing issues presented by Covid, so all in all we have been busy.
  • Friday 26 March 2021 Headteacher's Blog 26th March 2021 Just when we were starting to believe that Spring was coming and everything was beginning to feel so much more positive, we have been hit with another student being tested positive for Covid this week. This has resulted in more than forty Year 11 students having to isolate much to their frustration and disappointment. We would obviously like to wish the student concerned and his family well and this situation serves as a timely reminder that we are not quite out of the woods yet. We will continue to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students and our staff for as long as we need to.
  • Friday 19 March 2021 Headteacher's Blog 19th March 2021 As we reach the end of the first full week of having all the students back in school, it is time to reflect on just how quickly everyone has settled back into the daily routines. As I have walked around the school it has been really noticeable that the vast majority of our students are keen to get back into their learning habits and they seem determined to make up for any time lost. The teachers also seem happy to be back in the classroom and doing what they do best.
  • Friday 12 March 2021 Headteacher's Blog 12th March 2021 It is nice to be able to start my blog this week with more thank-yous than I know what to do with. Despite the masks, the one-way systems, the staggered start times and finishes and a whole load of other stuff it has been so nice this week to see us operating in some form of normality. It has been amazing to have all the students and staff back in school and what has struck me above all else is just what a happy place Lipson is becoming. I have lost count of the number of students and staff who have stopped for a chat and told me that they are just pleased to be back. So, who to thank first?
  • Friday 5 March 2021 Headteacher's Blog 5th February 2021 Finally, the time has come when we are able to welcome the students back to Lipson. The Year 12,13 and 14 students have been in school today doing their tests and the rest of the students will be in school next week, starting from Monday. I know that everyone is excited at the prospect of getting things back to something approaching normal as soon as possible and I share that feeling but we must remain mindful that the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff needs to continue to be our priority.
  • Friday 26 February 2021 Headteacher's Blog 26th February 2021 A very quiet week at Lipson with very little to report. Or maybe not! We are of course incredibly busy putting our plans together to welcome back all our students on the week beginning March 8th. A detailed plan will be shared with everyone as soon as it is finalised but we will continue to feed out information as and when we can. The difficulty is that no two announcements are ever quite the same and we are continually having to amend and update our plans as the guidance shifts.
  • Friday 12 February 2021 Headteacher's Blog 12th February 2021 What a team we are at Lipson!
  • Friday 5 February 2021 Headteacher's Blog 5th February 2021 As we come to the end of another week it is a good time to reflect on what has been, even in the current climate, a pretty extraordinary start to the term. I try not to go overboard when talking about Lipson to others as I always fear that it can breed a kind of complacency. I still see us as a school that is improving and there are still so many things that I want us to achieve together so I am never totally satisfied and always want more. However, the last couple of weeks have been amazing. What the staff are doing in such challenging circumstances is quite extraordinary. As well as setting up the online learning for everyone, we are managing our 'Essential School' for some of our most vulnerable students. On top of this we are providing lap-tops and chrome books for families that need them, coordinating food vouchers and have set up a fully operational testing centre on site. The role of the headteacher has never been more diverse, thank goodness I am surrounded by so many brilliant
  • Friday 29 January 2021 Headteacher's Blog 29th January 2021 As we come towards the end of another busy week in school it is a pleasure to be able to share several bits of really positive news with you.
  • Friday 22 January 2021 Headteacher's Blog 22nd January 2021 They say that a week is a long time in politics and I am sure that people in America could testify to that, this week in particular. But this week, in Plymouth,  in mid-pandemic lockdown has also felt quite long! However, after taking on board a lot of constructive feedback from students, parents and staff, I am confident that we are now better placed than ever to deliver a really high-quality online learning offer. I have to thank everyone who has contributed this week to help us plan the way forward.

  • Friday 18 December 2020 Headteacher's Blog 18th December 2020 As we reach the end of a turbulent term, the situation has once again changed at the very last minute!  Further to the government announcement yesterday regarding all students being tested for Covid on return to school;  Monday 4th January will now be a non-pupil day in order to put plans in place for testing.  We intend to bring Year’s 11 and 13 back to school on Tuesday 5th January, Year 12 on Wednesday 6th  January and other year groups from Monday 11th January.   All students will receive online learning if not physically in school.
  • Thursday 17 December 2020 Year 8 Choir Christmas Performance
  • Thursday 17 December 2020 Here Comes Santa Claus Our extremely talented musicians, with a little help from some creative elves (Mr Brook, Mr Goodman and Mr Mitchell), have put together a festive fun music video for you all.
  • Friday 11 December 2020 Headteacher's Blog 11th December 2020 As we move towards the final week of term, I would like to reiterate that despite having to work in some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable, we continue to go from strength to strength at Lipson. It should go on the record that the efforts of the staff during these times have been phenomenal and the general attitude and application of our students has also been remarkable. This is within the context of having to be sensitive to and manage the mental health and anxiety issues displayed by members of both these groups.
  • Friday 4 December 2020 Headteacher's Blog 4th December 2020 We were really pleased to welcome Year 11 and 12 back to school this week.  Things just weren’t the same without them!
  • Friday 27 November 2020 Headteacher's Blog 27th November 2020 It has been another busy week in school as we continue to try and get used to the 'new normal'. I would like to say a massive well done to our Year 11 and Year 12 students who have coped amazingly well with their enforced two weeks of isolation. Levels of engagement have been really high in both year groups and the staff should be praised for the way that they have kept up with lessons for these students online whilst at the same time being in school and delivering normal lessons to the students that are here. None of us have ever faced challenges like this before and it is always interesting to see how people react but the response from everyone so far has been outstanding.
  • Friday 20 November 2020 Headteacher's Blog 20th November 2020 We have faced many challenges throughout the year as we have tried our best to respond to the situation we find ourselves in but this week has been particularly difficult. A number of positive Covid cases in Year 11 and 12 have resulted in us having to isolate nearly 300 students. We are also having to keep an eye on our staffing levels to be sure that we can continue to stay open and serve the students in the very best way that we can.
  • Friday 13 November 2020 Headteacher's Blog 13th November 2020 I was deeply moved and proud on Wednesday as we marked Remembrance Day with a parade by our cadet force followed by the ‘Last Post’, played by Mr Martin.  The whole school observed a 2-minute silence whilst this most important and sombre of occasions was executed with immaculate timing and respect as we stopped to remember armed forces members who died in the line of duty.
  • Friday 6 November 2020 Headteacher's Blog 6th November 2020 Despite the anxious times we find ourselves in following the Prime Minister’s announcement last weekend, the return to school this week has been a very calm and organised affair.  Students and staff have settled in well and have clearly benefitted from the break of half term.  It is clear to see the added strain that the extra restrictions on our daily lives are having on everyone but students have returned to school incredibly focused, behaving in a mature manner and keen to learn. Our staff, as always have been flexible and positive and continue to go over and above what would be reasonably expected of them.
  • Friday 16 October 2020 Headteacher's Blog 16th October 2020 After last week’s Covid related incident, it has been a very calm and settled week in school.  The students have adapted quickly to the wearing of masks and the staff continue to cope superbly well with whatever is being thrown at them.  Most importantly, on my regular walks around the school, classrooms have been full of students who are engaged in their learning and teachers who are continuing to provide lessons of a really high quality.
  • Friday 9 October 2020 Headteacher's Blog 9th October 2020 We were made aware yesterday of a student from our school community who had tested positive for COVID 19.  Thankfully thorough steps had been put in place to deal with such an eventuality and working closely with Public Health England, we were able to swiftly put necessary steps in place to deal with the situation.
  • Friday 2 October 2020 Headteacher's Blog 2nd October 2020 Well, after an extraordinary amount of planning for the unimaginable, I am very pleased that we have made it to the end of our first month back at school!  I have been overwhelmed by the positive attitude displayed by our staff and the mature and sensible way our young people have adapted to the new daily routines.  They have clearly come back ready to get on with their learning.
