Principal's Blog 13th September 2019
We had the pleasure last night of welcoming prospective students and their families to our Year 5/6 Open Evening. The enthusiasm from staff and student ambassadors was addictive as they showed off all that Lipson has to offer. Excited primary students were keen to experience all the wonderful facilities and resources we have here. I was immensely proud of the showcase of fantastic work and learning on show around the school site. Families were keen to get involved with the interactive activities available to them on the night and we very much look forward to them choosing Lipson, as their first choice for secondary education. There will be more opportunities for families to come and see what we have to offer during our Monday morning tours which will start on 16th September from 9am.
The whole school has felt calm and settled this week. The tone has been set by our senior students. Under Mrs Coomber’s leadership the Sixth Form has a real sense of purpose. It is already evident that we are going to see more of our Post 16 students getting involved and making a contribution lower down the school. As I walk around school, dropping in to lessons, I am becoming used to seeing sixth formers helping our younger students and they also made a great contribution to last night’s Open Evening. But they are here to work and it is good to see that so many of them have come back with a really good attitude towards their studies.
Year 11 have also come back to school with the clear intention of meeting the target they have been set. Quite simply they have been challenged with achieving the best set of results that the school has ever had and their attitude and approach so far suggests that they are taking their target very seriously. Our mentoring system is now up and running and this pairs every single one of them with their own member of staff who will help, guide, support and, where necessary, challenge them during what is such an important year for them.
Year 7 continue to settle in well and we are looking forward to welcoming their parents, along with Year 9 parents to our Meet the Tutor evening on 19th September. This evening will offer the chance for carers to get to know their child’s tutor better and discuss how they have settled into life at Lipson. There is much planned for Year 7 to help strengthen the bonds between peers and teachers as we plan for the residential trip and the Bikeability programme.
Amongst many highlights this week, there has been the establishment of our staff Teaching and Learning group. I am quite sure that giving the staff the opportunity to just sit and talk with each other about what works in the classroom will have a positive effect on our teaching across the board. A massive thank you to Miss Cargin and Miss Lewis-Ward for getting this group underway.
Many thanks as always for your continued support, Mr Brook, Principal
